Target price adjustment (how to ask after a markdown)
Quick answer
Target’s official Price Match Guarantee (help article 000062256, confirmed September 2, 2026) says they will match if you buy a qualifying item at Target and then find the identical item for less at Target.com, in Target stores, or with a Target Circle deal that applies automatically. Ask at purchase or within 14 days, with an original receipt or packing slip. Store purchases go to Guest Services; Target.com and app orders use chat or 1-800-591-3869. Confirm that live article before you ask.
Shoppers search for a “Target price adjustment.” Target’s own help article uses a different name: Price Match Guarantee. As of September 2, 2026, that article is about Target matching Target’s lower price — on Target.com, in Target stores, or with a Target Circle deal that applies automatically when you identify as a member — not about matching Amazon or Walmart.
Read the live page before you ask. This guide restates what Target help article 000062256 said on that date. Target can change it. A blog’s day count is not a source.
For the generic difference between an adjustment and a competitor match, see price adjustment vs. price match. For a retailer-agnostic script, see how to request a price adjustment.
What Target’s official page actually offers
Target’s article says they will match the price if you buy a qualifying item at Target and then find the identical item for less at Target.com, in Target stores, or with a Target Circle deal that applies automatically when you identify as a Circle member. You may request that match at the time of purchase or within 14 days after purchase.
They also say they match Target.com prices on in-store Target purchases, and in-store Target prices on Target.com purchases. That is the own-price, post-purchase request Owed watches. It is still a policy request, not a legal right.
The same article requires an original receipt — physical or digital — or a packing slip for price adjustments up to 14 days after purchase. The lower price must be listed and valid at the time of the match. If Target cannot verify it, they say they may decline.
What “identical item” means at Target
Target’s page requires the identical item, brand name, size, weight, color, quantity, and model number. A nearby colorway, a different size, a bundle versus a standalone SKU, or last year’s model is not close enough. Ask them to look up the identifier on your receipt. Do not paste a prettier similar listing.
Target items cannot be price-matched to Target Plus items, per that article. If the cheaper listing is a Target Plus (third-party) offer, stop. That is a different seller, even if it sits on Target.com.
How to request it — store vs. Target.com
For a store purchase, Target’s article says to provide proof of the current lower price at Guest Services in your local Target. Show the live online price or digital ad on your phone; a team member verifies it. The article also says that when you use the Target app as proof, the app must show the price for the current store location.
For Target.com or Target app purchases, the article says to chat online or call Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869. Start from help.target.com. Lead with Target’s own current price so the first macro does not assume you brought an Amazon screenshot.
| You bought | Where Target says to ask | What to bring |
|---|---|---|
| In a Target store | Guest Services at your local Target | Original receipt plus a live Target.com / app / Circle price they can verify |
| Target.com or the Target app | Chat on Target’s help site, or 1-800-591-3869 | Order number, receipt or packing slip, and the current identical listing |
The article excludes in-store price matches from other Target stores. A cheaper shelf tag in another city is not the price that counts. It also says price match of items sold by Target.com, or prices through the Target app, is not available in Alaska and Hawaii.

I bought this on [PURCHASE DATE] for $[PAID]. Here is the original receipt.
The identical item — same brand, size, color, quantity, and model number — is now $[CURRENT] on Target.com / in this store / as a Target Circle deal that applies automatically.
Please apply Target’s current Price Match Guarantee and refund the difference. I am within 14 days of purchase.Chat or phone script
Requesting a Target price match on Target’s own current price — not a competitor ad.
Order [ORDER ID], purchased [PURCHASE DATE].
Item: [NAME], same brand / size / color / model as the receipt.
Paid: $[PAID]. Current Target.com / store / automatic Circle price: $[CURRENT].
Difference: $[DIFFERENCE].
Please refund the difference under the current Price Match Guarantee (help article: Target’s price match policy). Original receipt / packing slip is available.Circle deals vs. Circle bonuses
Automatic Circle deals that apply when you identify as a member are in the matching language on the official page. Target Circle Bonuses — just-for-you bonuses you must select in the app or on Target.com — are listed under exclusions and cannot be combined with a price match. Gift-card offers, registry completion coupons, and Target coupons are in that same exclusion list. Manufacturer coupons, the article says, are applied after a price match for in-store purchases only.
Proof of a Circle deal requires member sign-in, sign-up, or a mobile number entered at checkout. If you paid without identifying as a member, do not expect a later Circle-only price to count unless Guest Services can verify it under the current page.
What Target’s article excludes
These are on the official exclusions list as of the date above — not a rumor list:
- Clearance, closeout, liquidation, damaged, used, open-package, refurbished, pre-owned, or rent / lease-to-own.
- Deals that require a minimum purchase, a discount on the total store or site purchase, and non-branded items.
- Typographical errors.
- Credit-card offers, gift-card offers, financing, service offers, bundled offers, sales-tax promotions, free items, rebates, or mail-in offers.
- Contract mobile phones and plans, optical, product services (warranties, assembly), clinic and pharmacy, pre-order items.
- Alcohol, subject to state rules.
- Target items matched to Target Plus items.
Holiday doorbuster language is not spelled out as a separate numbered window on this article. If a seasonal banner appears on the live help page the week you ask, that banner wins. Do not import last November’s screenshot.
Does Target match Amazon or Walmart?
The current official article describes matching Target.com, Target stores, and automatic Target Circle deals. It does not describe matching an outside retailer’s ad. Do not lead with an Amazon or Walmart screenshot. If Target later adds or removes competitor language, the live article is the rule — not this paragraph.
Owed does not watch Amazon or Walmart.com own-price drops either. Those are separate companies with separate help pages.
What usually gets a no
- The 14-day window on the current article has closed (counted from purchase, unless Target’s live page says otherwise).
- The cheaper listing is a different size, color, or model number.
- The cheaper offer is Target Plus, clearance, a selected Circle Bonus, or a gift-card promo.
- You showed a screenshot Target could not verify, or an app price for a different store.
- You asked Guest Services to honor another Target store’s shelf price.
- You called it a competitor price match and they ran the wrong checklist.
One clean follow-up with the order ID, the identical identifier, and a link to the live Target listing is enough. If they cite an exclusion that is actually on the current page, stop. Chargebacks and “I know my rights” language do not belong here. This is not legal advice.
Should I return it and buy it again?
Only after you know Target’s current return window and whether the lower price will still be there. A return-and-repurchase is a new transaction. If the Price Match Guarantee still applies and you are inside 14 days, asking for the difference is the path the official article describes. Confirm returns on Target’s own help pages; do not treat a return as a loophole.
How Owed uses Target’s policy
Forward a Target receipt to your personal Owed address, or paste it in the app. Signing in never grants mailbox access. If the same Target SKU drops inside the published 14-day window and clears Target’s sourced exclusions, Owed shows the difference and prepares a claim kit in your name. You file through Target help. Refunds go from Target to you. There is no success fee. Pro is $9.99/month; the first 1,000 accounts get month one free.
You do not need an account to use Target’s policy. This page is meant to work on its own. See how Owed works, pricing, and retailers we watch. Next store in this series: Best Buy price adjustment.
